SLAB ARCHITECTURE

Assignment Create a house/building using the leather hard slab construction method based on an architectural style of your choosing. Rationale: Throughout history, people have created architecture for functional and decorative purposes. Through this lesson, students will have the opportunity to design their own creative structure and build it using slab construction. Students will be introduced to the idea that art is a part of their everyday lives. Requirements STEP 1 - Begin by researching architectural styles. Answer the following Questions before planning your design. 1.       What is the name(s) of the style of architecture you are planning to use to create your clay structure? 2.       When was this style of architecture most influential? 3.       List some key features/details of this architectural style (using appropriate vocabulary) 4.       What other styles of arts (literature, music, visual etc.) were popular during this time period? Do you see any connections between them? 5.       When thinking about this style of architecture try to imagine the people that may have lived during this time. Who Are they? Developing some fictional characters will help you envision the details needed for your house/building. List some details below about your “characters”. STEP 2 - Use reference photos from your online research and or do some EXTENSIVE SKETCHES! (Please label all of the various architectural details within your sketches) STEP 3 – Show the sketches to your teacher for approval and begin the construction of your paper templates. •Minimum 5” in any direction. *CREATE PAPER TEMPLATES – you will use these to trace your clay slabs. •DETAILS are very important! You should have a lot of them.
