The essential goal of art teaching is to inspire students to behave like artists...to feel what it is to gather an art idea on one's own and act on it. The goal is to reveal to students that art comes from within themselves -- not from the teacher.”
George Szekely

Independent Art Project

It is that time of year again! We are going to complete the semester with an independent art project. You are responsible for doing some research and writing a short proposal so your work can be assessed authentically, not only by me the teacher, but by you, the artist! This is an integral part of the process for artists looking to exhibit their work in public spaces.
This proposal will take the place of the traditional artist statement you are used to.

Proposal How to:

Your area of interest
  • ·         Specify the subject you are interested in and why. (Take some notes as you ask yourself: What am I interested in? What medium do I want to work? How does this project relate to me and my town? What statements do I want to make with my project (if any)?
  • ·         What will it look like? Will you have 3 paintings, 20 little paintings? A handmade book or series of drawings? The possibilities are endless!!

The ideas you wish to explore in your project
  • ·         Indicate what your proposed work will be about and what you intend to research.
  • ·         If possible list your research sources, such as key texts (books, articles, magazines) you have read and the work of any artists/designers or exhibitions you have looked at.
  • ·        what motivates you to work on this subject? Why do you think people will want to view your work?

The kind of work you intend to produce for your project
  • ·         Explain how your project will be carried out.
  • ·         You should detail the processes and/or procedures that might be involved.
  • ·         What materials do you think you will need to complete this project?
  • ·         You may wish to change this plan at a later date, but it gives us a preliminary idea of the kind of work you wish to undertake.

Previous relevant experience/Cue up
  • ·         How have you matured as an artist?
  • ·         How is this independent project is pushing you out of your comfort zone; are you attempting something new?
  • ·         To conclude your proposal, restate your reasons for wanting to create the work as your final Senior Art Project
